Question
Two customers try to buy the last item at once. How would you keep the order and stock consistent?
Your evaluation criteria
- Identifies the stock race
- Uses a row lock or conditional update
- Saves stock and order atomically
DeepRound
Two customers try to buy the last item at once. How would you keep the order and stock consistent?
Candidate
I’d use one conditional UPDATE to decrease stock only when stock > 0. If no row is updated, I’d return “sold out.” Otherwise, I’d create the order in the same transaction, so both changes commit or roll back together.
DeepRound Follow-up
The order commits, but the response is lost. How would you handle a retry without treating it as a new purchase?
A first screening step. Your engineers lead the full technical interview and make the hiring decision.

Candidate 024
Evaluated against your team’s criteria. Three equally weighted sections.
Overall score
76/100
Technical questions
72/100System design & trade-offs
Explained when to use a queue. Missed how to prevent duplicate delivery after a retry.
Live coding
88/100Correctness & complexity
Wrote a linear-time solution, handled empty input, and explained the space complexity.
Code review
68/100Data consistency & concurrency
Identified partial writes and proposed a transaction. Did not resolve concurrent transfers.
Answer review
Technical question
System design & trade-offs
When would you choose a queue over a synchronous API call?
Candidate answer
“I’d use a queue for work that doesn’t need to finish before we respond — like sending an email. The worker can retry if the provider is unavailable.”
Evaluation against your criteria
Explains when a queue helps and how retries handle provider failures. Does not address duplicate emails if a job is retried after a successful send.
Strong signals
Clear reasoning, correct implementation, and a practical understanding of transaction boundaries.
Gaps to explore
Idempotency and concurrency control need deeper discussion before assessing production readiness.
